Cataract is the clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye, that blocks the light to reach the retina, causing vision loss.

Cataract diagnosis

The diagnosis can only be possible after a full eye examination, that will allow to properly evaluate the cataract grade, but also to eliminate any other possible problems that cause vision loss.

How to treat cataract

In cataract surgery – that may combine laser- an artificial small lens is inserted in the eye (intraocular lens, or IOL) to replace the old blurry one. Before the surgery some special eye tests are required to calculate the ideal Intraocular lens.

This procedure is done under local anesthesia and takes only about 15 minutes. The organic lens is removed through a less than 2mm incision, by using ultrasounds or laser, and replaced by the proper artificial one. Simultaneous correction of astigmatism and presbyopia are possible using premium intra-ocular lenses (IOLs). After the surgery, the patient can immediately return at home and everyday life, however heavy weights and intense exercise should better be avoided for about 2 weeks after the surgery. Eye drops are necessary for about 3 to 4 weeks after the procedure. The day after the surgery an eye examination is also necessary, as frequent brief visits during the first 2 months.
